Promoting Literacy and Literary Endeavor on Long Island

The 4th Annual Harlem Book Fair on Long was held 9/30/2006 at Kennedy Park in Hempstead NY. Donna Hill, Lyah Beth Leflore, Toni Staton Harris and 12-year-old Zykeya McLeod were featured at the book-signing tent; and there were many other authors, publishers, booksellers, crafts persons and merchandisers on hand. The children had their own "open mike" where they recited or read and received gifts of books for their efforts. A face-painter, a balloon sculptor and 2 stilt-walkers kept them entertained. At the adult open mike, the AdLib Steel Band, Jerome "City" Smith, I Am Poetry, the Kingz Kidz and Cali Starks kept the momentum going throughout the day. Panel discussions: "The Pros and Cons of Self- Publishing" and "Cultural Issues Facing African Americans: It's Resolution Time!" were both lively and informative. It was a great day for promoting literacy and literary endeavor on Long Island.

The hosts of HBF on LI -2006 were: the African Atlantic Genealogical Society, QBR the Black Book Review, the African American Museum of NassauCounty and the Village of Hempstead; with the support of Verizon and Astoria Federal Savings. Special thanks to White Castle, Alpha Kappa Alpha - Pi Pi OmegaChapter, Grand Central Exterminators and Frederick Pauker for donating the books for the children; and to Perry's Auto Collision for underwriting the stilt-walkers. Our planning committee included AAGS members, members of AKA - Pi Pi Omega Chapter, the Coordinating Agency for Spanish Americans (CASA), the Hempstead School District (represented by Fran Edmonds, Assistant Principal - Jackson Main, and Fabbioelle Bowen, Teacher - Jackson Annex) and  Nassau Literacy. The project was endorsed by the Hempstead Chamber of Commerce
